Musharaf Surti found dead...

Man is found dead in road
A newsagent was found dead today on one of Walsall’s busiest roads after apparently being run over by a hit-and-run driver while delivering papers.

The body of the man, named locally as Mushtaq Surti, was discovered in Broadway West near the junction with West Bromwich Road at 5.49am close to the shop he ran with his cousin.

A white police tent today marked the spot where he was found.

Believed to be in his 60s, he ran Surti News on Broadway West and was often seen delivering the papers in the morning and evening. The shop was closed today.

Inspector Jan Leggett, of Walsall Police, said: “At the moment we are still trying to establish what has happened and are looking at a number of theories.

“These include the possibility that he was the victim of a hit-and-run. It is a very busy road and the weather this morning was atrocious and it would also have been dark.”

She said police were contacted following a call from a member of the public. Mr Surti was pronounced dead at the scene.

Express & Star sales representative Mike Arnold worked with Mr Surti for a number of years.

He said: “He was a nice man who was well liked and respected in the community and this is shocking news.

“He regularly delivered the morning and evening newspapers himself and was known by a number of people.”

Broadway West was expected to remain closed to motorists between Broadwalk Retail Park and West Bromwich Road until this afternoon while police continued their investigations.

The road closure caused traffic problems for people living and working in the area.

Walsall Police are appealing for anyone with information to ring 0845 113 5000.

Was

Aside from correcting the inaccuracies (his name was Musharaf, he ran the shop with his brother and he was 51) I feel compelled to pay tribute to this silent, unsung hero of the Walsall Muslim community and the community in general.

I say Walsall Muslim community because he truly was. Born a Gujerati so one would expect him to have an affinity to the 102 Wednesbury Road and Masjid Al Farouk. However, he is also well known in Masjid Abu Bakr as he led Tarawih there for some years when the Mosque was known as the 156 Mosque. More recently, he was leading Tarawih at Masjid Usman in Mount Street. Therefore a man who was Imaam to the Gujerati, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities.

A Hafiz following in the footsteps of his late father, another unsung hero and one of the earliest Muslims in Walsall, I remember as a child he won a Quaran competition which led to him going to the land of the Prophet (PBUH), Saudi Arabia to recite the Quaran and to compete with children whose mother tongue was Arabic. Imagine how he must have felt on such a grand stage at such a young age. More recently, I am aware that he was giving home tuition to the son of a dear friend of mine on a daily basis and I don't think the person concerned will mind me mentioning that he apparently refused to be paid for undertaking such a task.

I also said above that he was a silent unsung hero of the community in general. A newsagent by trade, come rain come shine and like clockwork he not only stood in the shop at all hours but you would also see him walk the streets of the edges of Palfrey and Fullbrook delivering newspapers. Regardless of the climate and environment, one would immediately identify him as a Muslim with his hat, beard and traditional attire.

He also had a passionate love for the local football club, Walsall FC standing on the terraces back in the 1970s and 80's again being easily identified as a Muslim due to his attire and more recently if in his shop on a matchday, you would hear him in earnest conversation about the game, the rights and wrongs of selection, the performance etc.

Is it any wonder then that the indigenous community have started marking their respects with the appearance of flowers outside Surti News on Broadway West tonight.

A family man who saw his family through tragedy of their own, a dear friend to my deceased brother who Allah swt also took back to him at a young age, I pray tonight that Allah swt has taken back one of his own for a place in the highest positions in Paradise and may Allah swt give patience and comfort to his family.

Assalamoleikum,

For those of you who know me, you will be aware that I can write, compose and deliver speeches, arguments and passionate pleas. In short words are my tools. However, yesterday I was left stunned and in a state of shock at the sad news of the passing from this world to the next of Hafiz Musharaf Surti. I tried many a time to compose some sort of tribute or message to post on this web site but could not find the words to do so. I am grateful for ARV to have taken the lead and say almost everything I would have wanted to say about Hafiz Musharaf. I would wish to add the following:-

He was my imam, teacher, a family friend, my personal friend, my newsagent and since August 2007 my son’s personal tutor teaching him to recite and memorise the Quran.

In today’s society (Muslim and non Muslim) to be judgemental on others and in particular so called Debondi or traditional imams/teachers is so easy and in vogue. ARV’s post will I hope show this particular member of the Walsall Community in a different light with his contribution to all sections of our local society. A local 51 year old imam passionate about Walsall Football Club, serving his neighbours and the Muslim community daily with a smile and gentleness that oozes noor.

We are advised to judge people on sincerity. Please read the following and then make your own judgement.

I needed a Tutor to teach my son to recite and memorise the Quran at his own pace and fitting in with the additional commitments of him attending secondary level school. I approached Hafiz Musharaf to assist. He understood my requirements immediately and said he would take on that responsibility. At this time I had not discussed venue or the cost. He met my son and assessed his ability and confirmed that my son actually wanted to become a hafiz. I then asked him about venue. He said without prompting, I will come to your house daily to fit in with his School commitments. I then asked him about cost. This is the first and only time I saw him get upset and raise his voice. Hafiz Musharaf made it clear to me in no uncertain words that he would teach my son because it was his duty to pass onto him his knowledge. He would not teach my son for money. I tried to reason with him using the skills of my profession about the fact that it was not a job, there was an element of expenses involved like petrol, his time, the inconvenience to him and the convenience to me and my family, but try as I might he would not budge.

He then went onto relate how he was taught to recite and memorise the Quran by his teacher the late Maulana Isakjee, another one of our leaders and pioneers who did so much for establishing the Muslim Community of all backgrounds in Walsall. Hafiz Musharaf told me that Maulan Isakjee used to do a 12 or 18 hour shift at work in the 1960’s but still would make time to teach his students the Quran for no reward other than that which he prayed he would receive from Allah. Hafiz Musharaf was merely following the example set by his teacher.

About two weeks later, I again tried to discuss the issue of money with him. As before, he refused to discuss it and said if I mentioned money again he would stop teaching my son. He made it clear that he would not accept gifts for himself or his family from me. In my view he was so careful not to be tainted by the acceptance of a gift that he refused offers of food, tea, drinks or even water at my house. He even refused lifts home when he had walked to my house during the cold winter evenings. He lived a good half an hour’s walk from my house.

From August 2007, through the month of Ramadhan, and winter to the day he was recalled to Allah, he came to my house at whatever time was convenient to my son. I learned yesterday that he even refused to go to India for a family visit and wedding because of his responsibilities to his one and only pupil. My son represents his School in a number of sports and plays for local sports clubs. This inevitably meant on some days Hafiz Musharaf had to come earlier than normal and on other days later. He patiently and lovingly taught my son Allah’s words. Progress was slow because of the understanding between teacher, pupil and parents of the need for Tajweed and accuracy over completing the memorisation as soon as possible and the balance between secular and Islamic education. At no time has my son resented or questioned Hafiz Musharaf’s method of teaching or being taught by him at all. In fact on learning of his death, my son’s reaction was a determination to complete what he has started in memory of his teacher and for his reward. That can in my opinion only be a reflection on Hafiz Musharaf’s character.

I pray that Allah sends my son and the community as a whole a substitute for Hafiz Musharaf who has all the qualities and sincerity that he displayed. I also pray that Allah grants him the highest position in Jannat, and gives his wife and children the patience, courage and wisdom to get through this difficult time. I know how much of a gap his passing away has left in my family’s life, one can only wonder the impact on Hafiz Musharaf’s immediate and extended family.

I am not be as lucid or as eloquent as my two predecessors. However I would like to add that as my neighbours I have always had the utmost of respect for them as a pleasant, pious and God-fearing family.

They have had their fair share of family trials and tragedies in recent years and have always reacted to these circumstances with patience, perseverance and prayer. I pray that they continue to draw on this strength through these difficult and testing times. May Allah have mercy on them.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajiun.

The unsung heroes

Postby World on Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:26 pm

May Allah grant the silent soldiers who dedicate their life to His Cause the ultimate reward of al-Firdaus in paradise.

These pious people go about their daily duty in this world quietly, without a bandwagon to please their Lord in the best way.
By observing their duty to mankind and its Creator by fulfilling their responsibilities and asking for nothing in return but the pleasure of God.

May Allah have mercy on his soul and protect him from the punishment in the grave and the punishment in the hereafter.
May Allah grant him the status of martyrs and bring to justice those who committed this crime.

May Allah continue his reward through the good deeds of his offspring and make the knowledge that he imparted a continuous charity for him.
May Allah make the Quran that he memorized a shield against the Hellfire and a guardian for him that accompanies him until its mission and promise of paradise are fulfilled.

May Allah make steadfast all of those to whom he taught the Quran and may they follow in his footsteps to be amongst the best of teachers.

May Allah increase the reward of his family through the bearing patiently in this time of suffering and knowing that Allah does not take away a loved one unless He wishes to increase the reward of the bereaved.

May Allah raise his station through the prayers of all those that remember him and make his resting abode one that is peaceful and calm.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family and we remember Hafizjee in our prayers - may Allah forgive him and have mercy on him.

Please make dua' for him and pay your respects to his family as is their right.

Hit and run Walsall man pleads guilty to causing death of newsagent

Thursday, October 29, 2009

A WALSALL man has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a local newsagent during a collision in the town last year.
Zahid Hussain, aged 54, appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday, October 28 charged with offences of causing death by dangerous driving and perverting course of justice. Mr Hussain pleaded guilty to both offences and will re-appear before Wolverhampton Crown Court on December 23 for sentence.

The charges followed a collision on Broadway West on the early morning of March 10 2008, during which local shopkeeper Mushraf Surti sustained fatal injuries.

The 51-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after being in collision with Hussain's Mercedes car.
He failed to stop following the collision, but was later arrested by local officers.

Marian Mayat, Mr Surti's daughter, today made the following statement on behalf of her family: "Yesterday Mr Hussain pleaded guilty to causing the death of my Dad by dangerous driving and to perverting the course of justice.
"He drove off from the scene, without helping or getting help for my Dad and then he tried to cover up his involvement in the collision.

"As a family we are relieved that Mr Hussain has finally accepted responsibility for his actions and hope that the court reflect the gravity of these crimes in the sentence that is given."

Paper shop killer jailed for five years

A newsagent who knocked down and killed a fellow paper shop owner while speeding through heavy rain at almost 50mph was today beginning a five-year jail sentence.

Zahid Hussain, 54, fled after the “catastrophic” accident, which killed married father-of-six Mushraf Surti, and arranged for his silver Mercedes to be repaired to hide the damage.

Mr Surti had been delivering newspapers on Broadway West, near to his Surti News shop, just before 6am.

Hussain had been on his way to work at Asif News in High Street, Brierley Hill. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday that there was heavy surface water and visibility was poor when Hussain’s C180 hit the 51-year-old victim on March 10, 2008. Mr Mark Rees, prosecuting, said: “The defendant then drove off, leaving him in the gutter some 52 metres from the point of impact.”

Police, who estimated the speed at impact to be 49mph, said the driving was “wholly inappropriate for the weather conditions”, the court heard.

Hussain said: “I had no time to react. I stopped and saw the body but I was terrified.” Police recovered CCTV of the damaged Mercedes driving away from the scene. They found there were 200 similar vehicles in the WS postcode area and Hussain’s name was top of the list. He told officers it had been vandalised. Hussain, of Broadway, Caldmore, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it.

In a letter to the court, he said: “I’ve behaved in a cowardly way. I can’t believe I acted in such a disgusting way – when a man lay dead in the road I just drove away. I don’t deserve leniency.”

Judge Michael Challinor, who also banned Hussain from driving for seven years, said: “Instead of trying to help him, you fled the scene.”

Mahfooza Surti, Mr Surti’s daughter, said afterwards: “On behalf of the family we would like to say a big thank you to Pc Mark Keenan for all his help and support.”
